Jacob Madigan was in a bind. Stranded in the Canadian wilderness and desperate to escape the cold, he tries to hustle a sweet old married couple into giving him shelter for the night.
However, Silas and Arthur have plans of their own, and the young drifter finds himself outmaneuvered and taken down a path he never knew existed.
Written in the Jo-ha-kyu style of ‘Beginning, break, rapid’, ‘The Initiate’ tells the story of an elder concerned about the future, a youth on the run from his past, a man in the middle struggling to find where he stands, and the mysterious Order of the First Guard that binds all three of them together.
Accompanied with the vivid illustrations of Papacon, writer J. Swartz takes the reader on a tale of passion, intrigue, loss, love, and finding your way exactly to where you were destined to be.
For so many, BDSM is nothing more than a colorful fantasy. However, for Messrs. Madigan, Clarke and Campbell, the realities of ritual, power exchange and sadomasochistic sex are about to get very black and white.

Reading this book was an emotional roller coaster for me. A wonderful one.Full Disclosure: I could be a character in this book - I’m gay, I’m kinky, I’m pagan, I’m in the Bear community, I’m even a fire-spinner.
Well you may say that should make it easy for me to identify with the people in this book, so just dismiss this review. To which I would say, no.
With all of those all-too-easy-to-stereotype “trappings” around a character, I think that makes it harder for an author to get to the human behind the “character” in order to say something worthwhile and real. Most authors just wouldn’t get that right. The author has done so here – admirably, thoughtfully, refreshingly.
Swartz delivers a great story that reads true.
When these men by turns expressed trepidation, joy, excitement – I felt it, too. I smiled at the discomfort and excitement of their first meeting. I clenched up a bit at the early tribulations they had with each other. I heaved a grounding sigh as they got past that and deepened in feeling for each other. I beamed at the pride they learn to feel for each other. I openly sobbed at the loss they experienced. I laughed and welled tears of joy for the love they found. And yes, I felt tingles at the eroticism they expressed as well.
The trite stereotype of what a rave book review is – “I laughed. I cried” – isn’t a stereotype here. I really did those things. Because the author poured so much life into the characters on the page, I couldn’t help but respond. That a first-time author could do this in a short, engaging book that most would consider and perhaps overlook as a light piece of erotic fiction unworthy of their time, is a welcome surprise.
If you’re gay, kinky, pagan, or… alive… the book is a very worthy and valuable read. By turns delightful, stirring, heartbreaking, and ultimately joyful, I wholeheartedly recommend this book and look forward to Swartz’ next one.
I admit I am partial to written word over audio, but I just listened to the audio version of the book as well and the voice is an entertaining companion to the written story and the great illustrations - making this a "full experience" title on Amazon in an all-too-lacking genre.

The Initiate edition by J Swartz Papacon Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a thoroughly enjoyable novel! I loved the setting--the Alberta woods--and I loved the well-drawn characters Daddybear Silas, sexy Arthur, and unsure cub-stud Jacob. The mixture of BDSM sexuality and paganism was believable and arousing, and so many scenes were so poignant that they left me wet-eyed. A great first novel, Mr. Swartz! I can't wait to see what books you publish next. I'll be waiting eagerly, as will many other pagans, leathermen, bears, and readers who enjoy sensuous, provocative, well-paced fiction.
Not for prudes or anyone hung up with man-on-man sex. This book of fantasy is intriguing, engaging, inspiring, and humorous. I suspect it is
based on Swartz's personal experiences as well as a good dose of his imagination. The struggles are human and Swartz does have a good handle on how they can and do play out in a man's life. At times I wept. The characters come to life. Well worth the read.
An excellent read, it was very hard to put down. It deals with adult situations that have rarely been explored for gay men and handles it in honest and creative ways.
Really a good read. Well thought out characters, a plot that moves along, and of course the "action" scenes are most stimulating! Highly recommended.
Awesome! This book is a page turner and very well written. The story is a "fantasy" that feels both realistic and fulfilling. Highly recommend!
This is a story that grabs you from the very first chapter. I couldn’t put it down. I have read many books with stories about BDSM but none like this one. The story captivates you. You lose yourself in the characters of Silas, Arthur and Jacob. I wanted so much to be in the book with them. Meeting Silas and Arthur for the first time like Jacob does. Many times I felt like I was there watching the three men and experiencing the emotions that took place.
It is so refreshing to read a book about BDSM and know from the beginning that the author is writing from a point of experience. Many books aren’t like that. Most authors are writing for a point of fantasy. Believe me, being apart of the BDSM community for the past four years I can tell the difference between fantasy and reality. This book is 100% real.
“The Initiate” by J. Swartz is one amazing book. I would whole heartily recommend this book to everyone. From the experienced to the ones just beginning their journey into the of BDSM, just as Jacob did. Truly an amazing book. Thank you J. Swartz for sharing this story to the world.
This book is great gay pagan erotica; and just a good book in general. I appreciated the diversity of content beyond the hot scenes, including well-thought material on polyamory, emotional debates on what folks choose to pursue in life, inter-generational relationships, death of partners, how community cares for folks who have lost partner, quiet moments in kink dynamics; it also shows applied consent negotiations and how to recover from scenes that went wrong.
As for the core of the goods... yes please! From wax play to group encounters, ritualistic torment to sensual seduction, I kept debating which was better, the plot or the explicit material. Given that both were excellent, I can not appreciate this book enough.
