A prison sentence he didn't deserve, the love of his life lost forever...
Find out where it all began....In this gripping prequel to The Harrisons, Joe and Rose's story will have your fingers flipping the pages like lightning as their passionate story unfolds.
After 5 long years inside, Joe Harrison is finally about to taste the freedom he's been dreaming about for so long, except that the outside world doesn't exactly look kindly on ex-cons. In fact if it wasn't for his childhood friend, Buddy, he'd probably be sleeping on the streets by now. Instead, he's working at famous track Keeneland, shovelling hay from dawn to dusk and just trying to stay out of trouble.
But when a student photography group shows up at the track one day, trouble finds him in the form of gorgeous budding photographer, Rose Parmenter. The chance encounter sends his life skittering in a new direction that neither one of them could have imagined, but even as they dream of what could be, the shadows of Joe's violent childhood are about to explode into their lives with savage fury.
Rose Parmenter's perfectly ordered life is bubbling along very nicely. Except for the fact that she hates her mother's endless snobby society lunches, she'd rather be a photographer than an accountant and she doesn't love her successful businessman fiancé, Geoffrey. In fact, if it hadn't been for the death-bed promise she'd made his sister Beccy, she probably wouldn't even be in this situation. But despite it all, she's determined to make it work and see through the promise she made to her beloved best friend. If only Joe Harrison hadn't turned up on her horizon and turned her whole world upside down.
Joe's exciting and romantic in every way that Geoffrey isn't, and for the first time in her cosseted little life, Rose is really living. Her growing awakening convinces her that Joe might just be worth risking everything for, but when he confesses that he doesn't love her, his heart-crushing revelation seals her fate with Geoffrey. That is, until the final explosive climax where Rose is forced to confront the ultimate dilemma between love and duty.

This is a prequel to a series. It is a standalone short story if you read it that way but if you read it as a prequel then it tells how the series starts. I am a bit confused though. We went from a nice overnight picnic to Chapter 1. I'm not sure what is going on since none of the character names fit the prequel. So, I am confused. There was no title page or write up explaining what I was getting ready to read. I did stop there. The story that I did read is about a boy from a very poor background, abusive father, beaten down mother and he winds up going to prison for trying to protect the mother that wouldn't tell the police the truth about what really happened. I don't believe she was very educated because if she had told the truth, the father would have gone to prison and couldn't do any more harm...but whatever. The story starts with him being released after serving 5 years which seemed like a pretty stiff sentence for a "boy" that had never been in trouble before and it wasn't attempted murder, it was just in defense of his mother. But..whatever...he is released and has really no where to go, no job, etc. But his childhood friend picks him up, has set him up with a job, and is ready to stand by him.
So he goes to work in a stable. Horses are all he really knows so he is willing to start mucking stalls just to have a job and hopefully get on his feet. It is at work where he meets the rich girl that he knows he can never have. This is the story of how they came together and got the beginning of their HEA. If you are interested in this series, I believe it would be good to read this first so that you can understand how it all began.
I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

Once In A Big Dream The Harrisons Prequel Alexa Bloom 9780995012349 Books Reviews
Imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, besides saving his mother from a horrible father. Admitting that much he willingly would do anything to help her. Now he’s out and here to set his life straight but make sure that man will never touch his mother again. But can he have a life he didn’t think he would ever have?
Joe gets out of being in jail for 5 years for beating up his dad, after the man beat his wife unconscious. His best friend helps him and he gets a Jon. Rose comes from money and is taking a photography class and see him working in the stables. She's engaged to the wrong man. Can they fix every thing on time.
I just discovered this writer. She writes fast-moving, great plots with a very tolerable level (I'm a thriller/mystery guy!) of description of walls, room, skies etc., along with a bare minimum of the really racy stuff. I enjoy reading these - I am now on my fourth one, and I just looked at her page and I am reading the last one. I will finish this one and be waiting for the next one!
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book
Rose Paramenter is engaged to Geoffrey due to a death bed promise to her friend. Joe Harrison has been in prison for 5 years, he has a job as a stable hand at Keeneland Racing Stables. Rose stumbles across Joe when her photography class is at Keeneland learning to take motion pictures. Rose is attracted to Joe, when her father’s Ranch Manager disappears she gets him an interview with her father. Joe is offered the job. Rose and Joe get close. With family drama and the promise do Rose and Joe get their HEA?
I thoroughly loved this book. I have read most of Alexa's books about this family. This book gave insight into how it all began. A love story that teaches that true love grows stronger through time, honesty, and trouble if you don't give up on that love.
Romance is the name of the game in this book. This book delivers what we all want more romance and excitement in our life. Overall I am very well pleased with this book and the excitement it has brought me. This book had me unwilling to put it down until I turned the last page as I was so enthralled with the plot. The author of this book knows how to deliver the good in this romance novel. Would I recommend this book to other people? Yes I would including friends .I absolutely think this is great book. All opinions are my own and they are not influenced by anyone but myself. If this review helped you at all please vote yes below.
Got invested in our main characters early on. Actually, rather surprised about it. Normally takes me longer. So great character development. Not a poor little rich girl story but kinda is. Not once did I feel sorry for Rose being brought up in wealth. Instead I felt her need to explore the world she hadn't been exposed to. She wasn't a wimp but felt somethings were her duty. Joe wasn't the bad boy redeemed but he was. This author somehow managed to make our main characters into something more than their circumstances yet keep them in the role you would expect for their circumstances. Not sure how to explain it which is why I'm not a writer. I put this book down for dinner with friends but picked it back up the moment I got back. During dinner my mind wandered back to Joe. So I call that a good read.
I received this book free from the authors newsletter. I highly recommend others do the same.
